What Layla Eats in a Typical Day

Layla’s meals are built around variety, balance over time, and foods she genuinely enjoys. Here is a look at what a typical day of meals, supplements, and snacks looks like for her.

  • Breakfast & Dinner

Layla’s main meals are built around a variety of proteins, vegetables, carbs, and other fresh ingredients. Every few days, I prep a batch of meals ahead of time and portion them out for breakfast and dinner. Rotating foods helps keep meals more interesting for Layla and gives her a wider variety of nutrients over time.

  • Supplements and Balance

Homemade dog food is not just about meat and vegetables. We use supplements and nutrient-rich ingredients to help create more balanced meals over time. Some things, like calcium and organ meats, are mixed directly into her food, while others, like probiotics and hip and joint supplements, are given separately.

  • Nutritional Snacks

Layla also gets small snacks throughout the day that add variety and extra nutrition. Some of her favorites include green beans, carrots, cucumbers, fruits, and her bedtime routine of an egg and one of her “cookies.”

The Approach We Take With Layla’s Meals

Homemade dog food does not have to be perfect. Over time, we found that focusing on a few simple things made the process much easier.

01

Use Real, Simple Ingredients

We try to use ingredients we recognize and feel good about feeding, including proteins, vegetables, carbs, and healthy extras.

02

Focus on Balance Over Time

Not every meal has to be perfectly balanced. We focus on variety throughout the week instead of trying to make every bowl exactly the same.

03

Stay Flexible and Keep Learning

Making regular changes to meet Layla’s requirement with supplements, ingredients, meal prep, and what works best for her is key to her homemade diet.

Meet Layla

Layla is the inspiration behind this site. She is a yellow Labrador retriever who loves food, walks, and taste-testing new ingredients.

From Foster to Family

Layla came to us as a foster after being rescued from a meat farm in South Korea. When she arrived, she weighed only about 37 pounds.

Learning What Worked

As Layla settled in, we started paying closer attention to her food, ingredients, and what made her feel her best.
